Elizabeth Edwards
Patent Scientist
Elizabeth Edwards has a unique insight into the electric vehicle industry, thanks to her experience as an electrical engineer, project manager and patent professional for various SMEs in the UK automotive sector. Her practice involves drafting, filing and prosecuting UK and International patent applications. She provides straightforward and concise IP advice that clients find easy to understand and act on.
A background in electric vehicles, automotive prototype development and motorsport facilitated Elizabeth’s keen interest in the development and patent protection of compact vehicle concepts, connected and autonomous vehicles, batteries and charging, vehicle powertrains, thermal management, and aerodynamics and downforce solutions.
The recipient of the IET Prize for Outstanding Achievement from the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department at the University of Bath, Elizabeth continued to build on her strong foundation of academic success after graduating by joining (the then highly secretive) McMurtry Automotive — an innovative electric vehicle start-up based in Gloucestershire.
There, Elizabeth initiated, grew and maintained a patent portfolio to protect cutting-edge inventions, enabling McMurtry to launch its prototype hypercar — the McMurtry Spéirling — at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2021. The following year the Spéirling — enabled by patent-protected technologies — broke the world record for the iconic Hillclimb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2022. Ascending the hill in just 39.08 seconds, the Spéirling broke the previous record of 39.90 seconds set in 2019 by Romain Dumas in the Volkswagen ID.R.
Elizabeth joined Murgitroyd in 2022. She is currently working to qualify as a UK and European patent attorney.
