David Mansell
European Patent Attorney
David works within our Chemistry and Materials group and has expertise spanning organic, inorganic and polymer chemistry, as well as in the development and protection of antibody-drug conjugates and the therapeutic use thereof. He also has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting inventions relating to mechanical devices, including scent devices. David works closely with all types of clients, from start-ups and SMEs through to large multinationals, and takes pride in supporting each of his clients throughout every stage of the patent lifecycle. David is also regularly involved in contentious work, including opposition and appeal proceedings at the European Patent Office.
After graduating with a First Class BSc (Hons) in Chemistry with Forensic Science, David continued his studies at the University of Manchester by undertaking a PhD in Synthetic Chemistry. His research involved exploring the role of inositol phosphate in natural iron chelation through the synthesis of biological inositol phosphates and novel diagnostic analogues.
David continued in the field of R&D, initially with a Postdoctoral Research Associate position, investigating the application of natural and engineered biocatalysts in the biosynthesis of industrially relevant chemicals, and latterly in the private sector. It was in the private sector that David gained experience managing the patent portfolio at an emerging biotechnology company where he supported a product development strategy through the evaluation and protection of new research assets.
David moved to Murgitroyd after gaining experience of Intellectual Property during his time in private sector research and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2021. He is keenly involved in IP education, both within the firm and externally, and has given lectures on Intellectual Property to business students at the Newcastle University and Northumbria University.
David is based in the Newcastle Office.
