Eleanor Coates
Directrice, Marques et Modèles
Eleanor Coates’ core area of expertise is trade mark and design protection and prosecution, including trade mark clearances, certification and collective marks, oppositions, assignments, cancellations and invalidations. She has significant experience in developing trade mark protection strategies for clients, from large international organisations to SMEs. small family firms and individuals, and enjoys the variety of work that offers.
Eleanor takes a proactive approach but with a sensible, long term view, ensuring clients achieve the level of protection they need. She routinely represents clients in opposition work before the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO). She supports pre-action dispute correspondence, and advises on infringement matters.
After graduating from the University of Glasgow with an MA (Hons) in Economics, Eleanor began working in London for The Patent Office (now UKIPO) as a search room assistant and hearings clerk. That gave her valuable insight into the role of the UK IPO.
Eleanor then moved into private practice, first at D. Young & Co (London), then at Rouse LLP, where she qualified as a trade mark attorney. During this period, she worked with large multi-national companies and undertook several world-wide registration programmes.
Eleanor qualified as a trade mark attorney in April 2005 and joined Murgitroyd in July 2006, working in the trade mark department of our Glasgow office. She is also a member of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys and regularly attends their lectures in Scotland.
Some of her major clients have been in the following sectors: Food and drink, retail consumer products, health and beauty, financial services, manufacturing, clothing, online retailing, television and media, internet services, mobile software applications, clothing, games, medical services, pet grooming, general merchandise and brand protection and trade mark clearance.
