Karen Fraser
Directeur, Brevets
Karen Fraser specialises in patent matters relating to computer software and hardware, media streaming, and telecommunications. Much of her work is in computer-implemented inventions (CII), where subject-matter lies close to the border of patentability in Europe and the UK.
Subject-matter Karen has worked on includes data structures and associated processing for storage, search and retrieval of data, content delivery networks (especially in relation to media streaming protocols and systems for OTT media services), IoT- and AI-based applications, secure transmission of sensitive data (in compliance with data security standards), cryptography (especially key management protocols and public key testing techniques), among many others. Karen is currently working on a number of matters relating to blockchain technology and cryptocurrency-based systems.
Karen works closely with her clients to identify aspects of their inventions that are eligible for patent protection in Europe. She has a wealth of experience in advising clients on patentability, invention capture, drafting and filing strategies, as well as infringement and validity matters. Although most of her work relates to patent matters before the EPO and the UKIPO, Karen also manages global patent portfolios for several of her clients for their applications in many countries outside Europe. Her work enables clients to align their IP strategy and business objectives at all stages of the patenting process.
Karen entered the profession in 2004. She joined Murgitroyd as part of the addition of the UDL team to the Murgitroyd team in October 2021. Karen is based in our London Central office.
