Environment
Our Environmental Engagement team has made significant strides in reducing our resource consumption. Through energy conservation, mindful resource use and recycling, we've drastically cut down office waste. At Murgitroyd, we're creating a culture that fosters sustainability and forward-thinking for a brighter tomorrow.

Lessening our impact on the environment
Murgitroyd is committed to protecting the environment and to lessen our impact on it.
We continue to reduce our Carbon Footprint and aim to become carbon neutral within the next ten years.
Murgitroyd has always been attentive to our footprint and impact on the planet and has always been committed to monitoring and reducing our use of natural resources. Our proactive Environmental Engagement team plays a key part in our Impact group to identify environmental causes we can support. Our team has successfully led initiatives which have seen us drastically reduce our use of paper, cardboard, plastic and water and electricity within our office network. Conserving energy, being intentional about how resources are used, and recycling have been key to these achievements. Initiatives led by the group have led to office wide engagement amongst all our colleagues ensuring environmental considerations are at the heart of every decision we make.
Our Environmental committee members are:
- Margaret Hastie – HR Business Partner
- Melania Padilla – Senior IP Docketing Administrator
- Bridgett Gallagher – IP Portal Assistant
- Andrew Sunderland – Senior Patent Attorney
- Steven Suèr – Director, Patents
The team meet regularly to discuss how we will continue to foster a caring culture and attitude towards our environmental impacts in the IP industry and in everything we do at Murgitroyd.

Legal Sustainability Alliance
Murgitroyd continued our membership of the Legal Sustainability Alliance (LSA) in 2024, and we are proud to have now been a member of this valuable network for several years.
The LSA provides advice and guidance to legal firms in the UK, to help with analysis and reduction of their carbon footprints.
In 2021, we signed up to The Legal Renewables Initiative, a commitment to source 100% of our energy from renewable providers by 2025. To date, 50% of our premises are on 100% green energy tariffs. We are aiming for this to rise to 75% by the end of 2025 as contracts come up for renewal.

Ecologi
Murgitroyd has worked with Ecologi since 2021 to fund tree planting and support carbon avoidance projects, such as onshore wind energy generation in Taiwan, or protecting old-growth rainforest in Peru. Over this period, we have funded the planting of 8,062 trees across 19 projects. In this financial year alone, we have offset 100 tCO2e through a mixture of tree planting and investment in carbon avoidance projects.
Investments in these very deserving projects helps us offset some of our carbon emissions.

ESOS
This year we prepared and submitted our first ESOS audit. This is a mandatory energy assessment scheme, administered by the UK Environment Agency, for organisations which meet the required criteria.
An energy audit was carried out to meet the ESOS Phase 3 compliance requirements for the period June 2022 to May 2023 with outcomes providing recommendations to assist us to improve our energy savings. Using these recommendations, we have prepared an action plan detailing the steps we plan to take and the corresponding energy savings we expect to make between now and December 2027.

Ecovadis
We are proud to have achieved the Ecovadis sustainability rating of “Committed” in May 2024.
