What do you need to prepare ahead of your first meeting with a Patent Attorney

You’ve decided to take the first step and seek IP (patent or design) advice in relation to your invention. Preparation is key. It is well worth investing time in gathering key pieces of information ahead of the meeting.

Here are some tips to make sure you maximise your time with your IP Professional:

Prepare

Bring with you a description of what your invention is and how it works. It is important to be able to explain how it differs from what is already out there and what the key features are that make your innovation stand out from the crowd.

Reflect

How could a competitor “work around” your patent. Are there alternative ways of solving the problem?

Research

Bring with you as much information as you can gather on what already exists (i.e. prior published documents) and what has been invented before. It is useful to know how the problem was previously solved.

Draw

“A picture is worth a thousand words”. Diagrams or drawings are really helpful to your IP Attorney to make sure there is better understanding of your invention.

Check

Who is the actual inventor? Is it an individual inventor or someone in a company, are there others involved? This is important information. We will need to clarify where the nub or crux of the invention came from to establish inventorship.
