Liam Lawlor
Senior Patent Attorney
A UK and European-qualified patent attorney, Dr Liam Lawlor has an academic background in both biotechnology and chemistry and is comfortable handling a wide range of technologies in these fields.
Liam has over 8 years of experience working with a wide range of clients, including universities, SMEs and foreign attorneys. Liam enjoys working with clients to understand their needs and to provide the best possible bespoke service, with a strong commercially-minded and client-focused ethos.
Liam has worked on drafting and prosecuting patent applications covering a broad range of subject matters in the life sciences and chemical sectors. In life sciences, he particularly enjoys handling matters related tissue engineering, genetic sequencing, stem cell, vaccine, and microbiology technologies. In the chemical field, some of his clients include those working in the fuel cell, additive manufacture and chemical engineering sectors. Liam has experience in patent searching, freedom to operate, patentability opinions and European opposition/appeal work. Acting for both patentee and licensee, Liam recently concluded a major worldwide patent assignment transactional project around a University originating patent portfolio and spin off.
Liam joined the profession in 2015 and joined Murgitroyd in December 2022 as part of the acquisition of TLIP by Murgitroyd.
Before joining the profession, Liam undertook a multidisciplinary doctorate at the University of Leeds. Liam’s academic research was focused on novel approaches to regenerative medicine, utilising small chemicals in stem cell tissue engineering of bone tissue. Liam spent many hours in the lab extracting and culturing adipose and dental pulp derived stem cells, synthesising small molecules and carrying out qRT-PCR. Liam also worked at a multinational pharmaceutical company during his chemistry Masters degree.
Liam is an active member of the patent community, being a member of the IP Inclusive Advisory Board, a Careers in Ideas Mentor and part of the CIPA Buddy Scheme. Liam is passionate about widening accessibility to and awareness of the patent profession.
Liam is based in our Leeds Office but can often be found visiting clients around the UK and at least twice a year, visits our clients in the United States to provide legal updates and discuss case management.
